| Bloemfontein is the capital and largest of the cities in the Free State with many smaller towns found on the open flatlands, nestled in mountainous areas and alongside rivers. The province is characterised by wide open spaces, long roads fading into the distance, winding mountain passes, rolling hills and vast croplands referred to as the 'bread basket' of South Africa. |

| Agriculture and mining are pivotal in the province's economy alongside other industries such as the largest petrochemical plant in the world which is based in Sasolburg. The Free State also boasts the deepest mine in the world, Tau Tona, at approx 1700m above sea level and 3.6km deep, if you were at the bottom of the mine you would be approx 2km beneath sea level. Nelson Mandela affectionately referred to the Free State as "the landscape that gladdens my heart". |
